A Mitsubishi Motors North America mostra no Salão de New York 2016 um dos modelos mais aguardados da marca nipônica, o Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), como o nome diz, um híbrido com carga elétrica recarregável em tomada. A Mitsubishi diz que o Outlander PHEV representa muito bem uma síntese da sua história que engloba muitos anos de mobilidade automotiva ligada à eletricidade e a fama de sua tração 4X4 nos mais difíceis ralis do mundo.
O modelo (que brevemente começará a ser vendido na Europa e Estados Unidos), vem com motor 2.0 a gasolina associado a dois propulsores elétricos de alta performance. A tração, como de costume nessa marca, é integral e as unidades recarregáveis em tomadas comuns, são montadas separadamente em cada eixo. A bateria de alta capacidade 12kWh é formada por íons de lítio.
Três modos de condução estão disponíveis: EV (modo puramente elétrico), híbrido de série (com a energia elétrica da bateria funcionando em paralelo com um gerador) e híbrido paralelo (potência do motor à gasolina + assistência do motor elétrico). O sistema PHEV seleciona automaticamente o modo de avanço mais eficiente dadas as condições da estrada e outros fatores. Esse Outlander também possui um modo de frenagem regenerativa que recupera e armazena a eletricidade que seria desperdiçada nos discos de freio.
